On 2nd January, 1915, the 1st Middlesex battalion of 19 Brigade, then with 6th Division, moved into trenches running from Touquet to Rue du Bois near Armentières. Heavy and persistent rain made the conditions here awful with trenches water-logged and with their sides caving in but, rotating between the front line and reserve positions company by company, they remained here until relieved on 18th January. On 14th January, the day on which Charles Gooding was killed, there was increased enemy sniper fire directed against the trenches held by C Company. |
